Flea Treatment Brisbane

Carpestology is a family-owned company in Brisbane that deals with flea control and carpet cleaning all at once. This is important as fleas stay in your carpets and in your backyard way longer than they would stay on your dog. We clean the environment effectively and provide pest control alongside carpet steaming when needed and will make sure to give you an honest opinion regarding your expectations post-clean-up. If you have flea bites on your legs, a scratching pet, or black specs from fleas in your carpets, then please give us a call.

Why DIY flea treatment usually fails in Brisbane homes

Brisbane’s climate of high humidity and warm temperatures is pretty ideal for fleas. They mature faster because eggs hatch quickly and the larvae mature more quickly. The pupae remain dormant in carpets, waiting for vibrations and warmth to awaken them. All OTC treatments kill the adult fleas, but not the eggs and larvae that have already infested the environment. There is also another reason why DIY methods don’t work. The life cycle of the flea. The adult flea is just only 5 per cent of the entire population of fleas that are found in your house. The remaining 95 per cent live in the carpet and floor cracks and even in the yard in the form of eggs, larvae, pupae, and recently hatched adults. Flea collars and flea medication on the pet are part of the answer, never the whole answer. Without treating the environment alongside the pet, you’re chasing the problem rather than fixing it.

How our flea treatment works

1

Initial inspection of the property and infestation severity

Before any spraying is done, we do a walk-through with you on your property. We inspect the places where the pets frequent and observe if there is any flea dirt found on the carpet pile or on the pet’s beddings. We ask about the possibility of fleas biting people and where these bites occur.

This is what will determine the approach to be taken. A slight infestation in a one-bedroom apartment will require less pesticide and less restrictions to gain entry than a massive infestation in a five-bedroom house with two dogs in its backyard.

2

Targeted insecticide and IGR application indoors

Inside, we use the combination of residual insecticides and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). The insecticide acts instantly to kill adult fleas and remains active for weeks to come. IGR prevents development of flea larvae to become biting adults, disrupting the life cycle where other products fail.

The emphasis is placed on carpeted areas, skirting boards, under bed and lounge furniture, and other places where you keep your pets. Hard floors are treated only along the perimeter, where fleas hide within dust and pet hair.

3

Outdoor and yard treatment for breeding zones

Flea breeding can also happen outside, more commonly in shaded soil, garden mulches, under patios, and even in places where your dog likes sleeping. Whenever there is a spot your dog is fond of outside, you can bet there will be flea eggs there.

The yard is treated using a product that is appropriate for outdoor applications and can be used in environments where there are pets and kids. In the case of heavily infested yards, a second outdoor treatment may be required after two weeks, depending on the conditions.

4

Follow-up treatment to break the flea life cycle

The pupal stage is the hard one. It remains inside a cocoon and is not impacted by any insecticide. The pupae emerge when stimulated by heat, vibration, the carbon dioxide of a host, or footsteps on carpeting.

If your problem with fleas is fairly serious, you can expect to need a second application of flea control product 2-3 weeks following your first appointment. This will capture the newly emerged fleas from the pupae state and prevent further egg production.

Why combining flea treatment with carpet steam cleaning works better

Most pest control companies will spray the insecticide and leave. The problem with this is that while it will kill fleas, it won’t actually get rid of anything that is already in your carpet; namely flea dirt, larvae, eggs, and pet hair, which the larvae need to eat.

Since Carpestology performs pest control along with carpet steam cleaning in one company, you will not be required to pay two separate people for each service.

What steam cleaning removes that spraying alone misses

Hot water extraction is a technique (also referred to as steam cleaning) that employs very hot water with powerful vacuum suction in order to wash the carpet fibres. The heat itself eliminates any eggs and larvae exposed to it. The vacuum extraction process removes the fleas themselves, their dirt, and their food source from the carpet.

Surface spray on its own can’t do this. While the spray treats the surface of the carpet, all parts underneath remain unaffected by the spray. Most commonly, people come to us for pest control services saying “We’ve sprayed our house for fleas, but they returned,” because no one removed what was already living in the carpet before the spray went down.

Our integrated flea treatment and carpet cleaning package

We steam clean the carpets to remove the eggs, larvae, flea dirt, and all the debris that the larvae will feed on. Afterwards, we spray the insecticide and IGR over the clean fibres because it penetrates better and doesn’t just sit on the soiling.

Most residences that have ongoing infestation problems will find the above package to be the perfect solution within one visit and one follow-up visit. The good thing about using the combination package is that it is safer for any family that has children or pregnant women, too.

What to expect in the 2 to 4 weeks after treatment

Why you may still see fleas (and when to worry)

Fleas might stick around for two to four weeks after treatment. Or perhaps even longer, depending on how many fleas there are. It does not mean that the flea treatment did not work.

In essence, what is happening here is that the pupae are hatching out. The adult pests that emerge walk to the carpet, get contaminated with the insecticide and die before they can multiply. IGR ensures that should any eggs be produced, they will never develop into biting pests.

You should expect to find fewer fleas each week. If the number does not decline after four weeks (or it increases), you should contact us. We offer free re-cleaning and retreatment on the same day where possible.

Vacuuming, washing, and access guidance

Vacuum daily for two weeks, and after that, vacuum every alternate day for another two weeks. This will lead to hatching of the eggs on the carpet, thereby speeding up the process. Make sure that the gathered eggs are discarded from your home.

All pet bedding should be washed in hot water on the same day of treatment and after one week again. It is advised that you do not shampoo or steam your carpet within four weeks of our treatment, since this will reduce the effect of the insecticide sprayed.

The area should be dry before you and your pets are allowed to re-enter, and that will take about two to four hours from when we leave. You should keep your pets away from the wet areas outside.

Flea treatment for end-of-lease and rental properties

If you have had any pets while living at the property, nearly all leases within Queensland stipulate that there will be a professional flea treatment carried out prior to your exit from the property. It is non-negotiable on the part of the property manager.

When property managers require flea certification

In most instances, it is mandatory that the property management obtain an invoice or receipt from a certified pest control service, containing the date the treatment was done, the address of the property, the license details of the pest controller and proof of flea pest control. This may sometimes be issued using a letterhead or via email.

We have done flea treatments in the past for Brisbane leases, and we understand what is expected from each agency. If there is anything special that needs to be done by your property manager, please provide those details while making your reservation.

Bundled end-of-lease carpet clean and flea treatment

End of lease typically requires a professional carpet steam clean as well as flea treatment if pets have been in the property. We bundle both into one visit, which usually saves money compared to booking separate trades.

You get one invoice, one technician, one timeslot covering both jobs, and both compliance items handled. If your property manager raises a question afterwards, we’ll back the work with a return visit at no extra charge.

Pet safety and what you need to do before we arrive

Our products are pet-safe after drying, and we only use pet-safe formulations that work perfectly well in homes with cats, dogs, children and pregnant women. But there are a few steps you need to take beforehand.

Treating your pet at the vet alongside our service

It makes no sense to treat the environment without treating the pet. The pet will continue to introduce fleas back into the home because it is coming in contact with other animals and wild animals that roam your yard or neighbourhood.

Schedule an appointment with a veterinarian during the same week we’ll visit you. Nowadays, there are pills that will kill the adult fleas on a dog in just a few hours and work for one month or more after being used.

Preparing children, pregnant occupants and sensitive household members

Please make sure that you have vacuumed well prior to our arrival, and put away all items, such as toys, shoes, laundry baskets, etc., that you store on the floor. Please also cover or remove all pet food/water dishes, fish tanks (cover and turn off air bubbles), birdcages, and reptile habitats.

Children, pregnant occupants, anyone with asthma, and anyone with chemical sensitivity should be out of the house during treatment and for at least two hours after we finish, or until surfaces are dry. Open windows once we leave to ventilate. If anyone in the household has had allergic reactions to pest treatment before, tell us when you book, and we’ll adjust the product selection.

How much flea treatment costs in Brisbane

Flea treatment pricing in Brisbane varies based on a handful of factors, and we’d rather quote you accurately than throw a number on a webpage that doesn’t match your situation.

What moves the price up or down: the size of the home and number of carpeted rooms, whether you need indoor only or indoor plus yard treatment, the severity of the infestation, and whether you’re bundling flea treatment with carpet steam cleaning. Heavy infestations needing a follow up treatment cost more than a single visit. Bundled flea treatment and carpet cleaning works out cheaper than booking the two services separately, because we’re already on site with the equipment.

Send us your suburb, the number of bedrooms, whether you have pets, and whether you want indoor only or indoor plus yard treatment. We’ll come back with a free quote, usually the same day.

“Matt did a fantastic job restoring my two stained, cream coloured, Koala couch/beds, and ottoman, to brand new condition. He paid so much attention to detail, was efficient, knowledgable, and nothing was too much effort. His price was extremely reasonable considering the quality work. I thoroughly recommend Matt for carpet, rug, couch and mattress cleaning.”

Brenda Coleman

“I cannot express enough how amazing my carpets/couch/rug came up after Matt cleaned them. I was thinking I had to buy a new rug and couch. All stains came out and it looks as good as the day I bought it. I’ve had two previous cleaners in the past that could not get the stains out. Absolute 10 out of 10 score. So friendly and reliable. I will definitely be recommending to all my friends.”

Melissa Shay

“Matt did an amazing job! He was able to book me last minute which was great. Super kind, and with great predisposition – arrived on time, worked super fast and everything looks fab! He did a bedroom carpet, a large rug, our mattress and couch. Thank you Matt! Super Recommended”

Frequently asked questions

How long does a flea treatment appointment take?

Indoor-only application of a flea spray inside an average-sized house takes about 45 to 90 minutes. A yard treatment will take another 30 minutes. When combining carpet steam cleaning with a flea treatment, the process may take two to four hours.

Once the carpet feels dry to the touch, which is usually 2-4 hours after the steam cleaning and flea treatment together, or just under one hour if treated only by spraying. Do not allow animals access until the areas have completely dried.

Yes. Environmental treatment will not work if you continually allow your pet to introduce fresh batches of fleas into your household. You should plan a visit to the veterinarian within the same week.

Light infestations usually get treated in one single session. Moderate to heavy infestations will require another treatment two to three weeks after to account for fleas that hatch from their pupal state. You’ll be informed about this after the initial inspection.

Once our products have dried, there is no longer any concern regarding safety; however, those with chemical sensitivities in your home should leave while we perform treatment and remain away from the premises for at least two hours, or until the surfaces have dried completely. Please inform us of any sensitivities prior to booking.

Flea activity within the first two to four weeks is quite normal since pupae will continue to hatch out. This will be declining from week to week. Should there be no difference seen in the fourth week, please contact us so we can come out for a repeat application.

Yes. Treatment outdoors is meant for shady soil, mulch, under decks, and places where your pets sleep, where fleas reproduce. If you have pets that go outside, it’s necessary to treat the yard, too.

We can give you a billing statement that will comply with property manager requirements, indicating that we have performed the work through a certified technician. The services can be combined with steam cleaning carpets as well.
