What our couch cleaning service in Brisbane includes

Cleaning a couch involves more than waving a magic wand over the cushions in hopes that it works. All jobs are done in the exact same order to ensure nothing is overlooked or damaged.
1

Fabric inspection and care code check

Before applying any treatment, we check the manufacturer’s label (which can usually be found inside a piece of fabric lounge furniture sewn into a cushion or behind the skirt), and will either read W (safe for water cleaning process), S (solvents only), WS (both) or X (only vacuuming). Based on this one letter, we determine if hot water extraction is possible or if we need to opt for an alternative, namely, dry solvent cleaning. Apart from this, we also inspect for any prior damage, loose stitching, sun damage or patches where the fibre has already broken down. If there’s an issue, you hear about it before we start.

2

Pre-vacuuming and spot pre-treatment

Each and every couch is pre-vacuumed using a HEPA filtered machine before adding any water to the upholstery material. All loose debris (including pet hair, food, dust, sand particles, and other dirt particles) is extracted from the material dry. Attempting to extract the couch upholstery without pre-vacuuming will only push the particles further into the material weave. Individual stains are pre-treated using solutions appropriate for what created them. This means that a red wine stain, coffee stain, suntan lotion stain, pet stain, or mystery stain on a light coloured sofa will receive individual treatment. Each one responds to different chemistry, and the right pre-spray sitting on the stain for the right dwell time does most of the heavy lifting.

3

Hot water extraction deep clean

For couches rated for wet cleaning, we use hot water extraction (HWE), which is most commonly referred to as “steam cleaning”. Hot water is injected at the right amount of pressure to loosen stains in the fabric, agitated gently through the fabric fibres, then extracted immediately using an industrial-strength vacuum. The cleaning done using HWE is more thorough compared to using a domestic machine, as the extraction process is powerful in terms of pressure, vacuum, water temperature, and wand design. The fabric will be left slightly damp after cleaning, but certainly never soaked.

4

Stain removal and deodorising

During the cleaning process, most stains are removed with the initial extraction. However, some stubborn spots require a second attempt using a specialised cleaner. When needed, we apply a sanitising treatment that eliminates odour-causing bacteria instead of just covering up the smell. Pet odours, in particular, are frequently addressed. These smells often originate from the padding beneath the fabric, not the fabric itself. Therefore, surface sprays offer only a temporary fix. A thorough sanitising treatment penetrates the padding to neutralise the bacteria responsible for the odour.

5

Optional fibre protection treatment

Following the cleaning process, we may use a treatment that protects each individual fibre, giving you more time between when a spill occurs and when it stains. This is an optional service. For those with children, pets, or fabrics that stain easily, this is something to consider. If the couch sits in a formal room and is never used, you likely won’t need it. We will let you know if it’s worth your while.

Fabrics we clean (and the one we don’t)

Certain upholstery materials can respond quite differently to water, heat, chemical treatment, and friction. Here’s what we handle and what we don’t.

Cotton, linen and other natural fibres

While both cotton and linen are lovely fabrics that feel wonderful to sit on, they are the most fragile materials used for upholstery. They will shrink with excessive moisture exposure and will have water marks if dried unevenly. They will even exhibit signs of colour bleeding when exposed to moisture with the wrong pH level. Depending on whether the cleaning care code states hot water extraction or dry solvent cleaning, we will use one of those two methods to clean your fabric upholstery, taking its age into consideration. Testing for colour compatibility on an inconspicuous spot is also compulsory before applying any remedy on the visible spots.

Polyester, microfibre and synthetic blends

Of all the materials, synthetics are the most forgiving and easy to clean. Polyester, microfibre, and any other blend of synthetics can be easily cleaned using hot water extraction. Dirt comes out of them easily, and they dry quickly. If your couch is under ten years old and bought from a regular Australian retail store, then chances are it is a synthetic material. Microfibres, in particular, clean excellently with hot water extraction, and even the most used couch will appear new again after cleaning.

Why we don’t clean leather couches

We don’t clean leather. Leather requires unique products and a specialised process, distinct from fabric care. Properly treating leather is a specialised trade. Instead of risking damage to a couch worth thousands by doing a partial job, we prefer to recommend experts who focus on leather care daily. We do clean fabric, microfibre, cotton, linen, polyester blends, and most upholstered furniture, but leather is outside our scope.

Why Brisbane couches need cleaning more often than most

The Brisbane climate can be quite tough on upholstery compared to drier areas. So, if you moved from somewhere like Melbourne or Adelaide, your current couch cleaning schedule may not suffice.

How humidity accelerates dust mite and bacteria buildup in upholstery

Dust mites can flourish when the relative humidity levels are around 75%. That is the level at which Brisbane sits for most of the year. Dust mites thrive off skin cells, which your couch collects in large amounts because you sit on the same cushion each evening. Warmth and moisture promote the growth of dust mite colonies, whose waste products are some of the most frequent allergens found in the home, particularly in the subtropical region. The same environment that promotes the proliferation of dust mites benefits the growth of bacteria in the foam below the upholstery. You might think you’ve done enough by just vacuuming the surface, but the build up in the foam is doing its own thing.

The spill-to-stain window is shorter in a humid climate

In a dry environment, you may have ten to fifteen minutes to blot up your coffee stain before it dries. In Brisbane, you will be lucky to find yourself with five minutes to clean the spill. The humidity slows down the evaporation of water on the surface while the colour particles continue moving into the fibres. So, by the time you get a cloth to clean the spill, it is too late. It is for this reason that “I’ll do it later” seldom works on Brisbane furniture. Old spills that sat through a humid week almost always need professional extraction to shift, and even then, some don’t come out fully.

Why the wet season is the worst time for a DIY deep clean

DIY couch cleaning with a hired machine is risky any time of year, but between December and March, it’s a bad call. While the actual process of couch cleaning does not pose any problem itself, the subsequent drying process does. Renting a machine will yield significantly less water extraction than professional truck-mounted or portable equipment, resulting in a wetter couch. When that’s combined with 80% humidity and a lack of airflow, the result is mould that develops within the foam and cannot be removed. Professional equipment extracts a lot more water, and we bring air movers for jobs where drying conditions are poor.

How often you should get your couch professionally cleaned

Average household: every 12 to 18 months

A couple with no pets or children who use the lounge only for a couple of hours every evening should be cleaning their couch every 12-18 months. This is enough to prevent dust and skin particles from accumulating in the fabric, but not so frequent that you’re spending money on a couch that looks fine. Regular vacuuming in the meantime will help keep it looking good.

Homes with pets or young kids: every 6 to 12 months

Add a dog who naps on the cushions or a toddler with a sippy cup, and your time frame becomes shorter. The period from six to twelve months is a good range to go for. The oils in pet hair seep through the cushioning material faster than you might think, and after accumulating for a while, the odour reappears between cleans regardless of vacuuming frequency.

Commercial and high-use settings: every 3 to 6 months

Waiting rooms, medical receptions, hotel lobbies, office lounges and short-stay lodgings are all at the highest level of use. Three to six months is the norm. Appearance counts when dealing with businesses, since the first thing that a client sees is worn furniture, and the expense of cleaning more frequently often costs less than replacing sofas every second year.

Steam cleaning vs dry cleaning your couch: which suits your fabric

Each sofa requires its own approach, as the material it’s made from, its age, and even the type of stain that needs to be cleaned can factor in the decision.

When hot water extraction is the right call

HWE is the correct option for synthetic fabrics, microfibre, modern polyester blends, and any couch with a W or WS code. The process goes further into the fabric’s pile compared to dry cleaning, and that ensures much more soil is extracted, rinsing away the cleaning agent and leaving the fibres truly clean instead of just surface cleaned. For an old couch in a family home, HWE is the way to go.

When dry cleaning is safer for delicate fabrics

In cases of natural fibres such as cotton and linen, antique fabrics, any fabrics tagged with the letter “S”, and those more prone to colour migration, we swap to a low moisture or solvent based cleaning process. These cleaning agents work by breaking down dirt and oil without bringing in the element of water, which creates water marks, shrinking, dye migration and loss of foam quality. While less effective than HWE, it’s always the safe choice for delicate items, and on the right fabric, it still does a fantastic job.

When your couch is too far gone to save (and when it isn’t)

Some couches simply don’t justify the effort of cleaning. When the foam has lost its shape, the frame creaks with every movement, or the fabric is worn thin, cleaning won’t revive it. Even if a dog has used it as a chew toy for years, a good scrub won’t save the day. You’ll just end up spending money only to find yourself in the market for a new couch within a year. A couch that’s a good candidate for cleaning still holds its shape, and the fabric remains largely intact, with stains and dirt being the primary issues. If you’re unsure about the condition of your couch, feel free to send us a couple of photos before deciding. We prefer being upfront if a cleaning isn’t worthwhile rather than taking the job and leaving you disappointed.

What you can do before we arrive to get a better result

Blot stains, don’t rub

If there is a spill that occurred within the last couple of days, and the stain is still wet, blot the area using a white, clean towel. Apply pressure, lift the towel, and continue the process using another section of the cloth. The stain will penetrate the fibre when rubbed, causing damage to the surface, which leaves a fuzzy patch even after the stain is gone.

Note the fabric care code if you can find it

Take a closer look underneath the cushions, behind the skirt, underneath the sofa, or even along the bottom fabric and see if there is a small label that has a “W,” “S,” “WS,” or “X” on it. You can send us an image via text message if you do find one. If you can’t find it, don’t worry, we’ll work it out when we arrive.

Clear the area and plan for drying time

It’s best to move the coffee table away from the area and try to pull out the couch by a metre if possible. Also, remove any fragile items near the couch. Pets and children should avoid the area around the couch for several hours after cleaning, too. It takes about 2-3 hours to dry a couch after morning cleaning, but when it’s humid outside or there is no fresh air in the room, leave the windows open and direct a pedestal fan diagonally across the cushions. Fans positioned this way move moisture off the surface much faster than a ceiling fan pointing straight down.

Brisbane Northside: Bald Hills, Bracken Ridge, Wavell Heights, Everton Park and Everton Hills, plus Chermside, Kedron, Nundah, Ascot and Clayfield. There are many timber houses in the Northside that date back to when there were fabric lounges that have gone through many humid seasons, and this is precisely where the work of professional extraction really pays off.

Brisbane Southside and South Brisbane: South Brisbane, West End, Woolloongabba, Coorparoo, Holland Park, Mount Gravatt, Carina and Carindale are all standard coverage. Inner South flats and the traditional post-war houses from Holland Park to Camp Hill comprise a sizable portion of our Southside jobs. We can frequently arrange same-day visits due to our location in Camp Hill.

Brisbane West (Sinnamon Park and surrounds): Sinnamon Park, Indooroopilly, Kenmore, Sherwood and Graceville are all within coverage. The west gets a mix of new estate houses with modern synthetic lounge sets and old character houses with delicate fabrics, which means the process is different for each task.

Brisbane East (Seven Hills and surrounds): Seven Hills, Bulimba, Hawthorne, Norman Park, Manly and Wynnum are regular coverage on the east side. Humidity levels at Bayside tend to be higher than the rest of Brisbane, which is why there are many instances of mould growth on sofas here, especially during summertime.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a couch take to dry after cleaning?

On average, most couches made from fabric dry completely within 2 to 4 hours after being cleaned using hot water extraction and dry overnight. Drying time depends on humidity levels, ventilation, cushioning, and exposure to sunlight in the room.

For the most part, yes, provided the odour is present in the fabric and surface padding layers. We apply a sanitisation process that targets the bacteria responsible for emitting the odour and destroys it, without attempting to mask the smell. Old and deep-set urine odours within the foam core can occasionally be beyond redemption, and we will inform you of this at the outset.

Yes, but not always. While fresh stains can be removed at a far greater percentage, bleach, dye, and other damage from sun exposure are not stains, technically speaking, but rather changes within the fabric structure itself. We’ll evaluate each stain and let you know our thoughts on removal success prior to work.

Yes. We can clean your dining chairs, ottomans, scatter cushions, and armchairs separately, or incorporate them into your couch booking. The price per chair will be reduced as they are incorporated into the lounge cleaning booking.

Absolutely. Our cleaning solutions are made specifically for use on upholstery and are completely safe for children and pets. They do not contain any toxic chemicals and will not leave any residue on surfaces where your children might be sitting. Just keep pets and children off the couch until it’s fully dry as a standard precaution.

Yes. We provide cleaning services for lounges, seating in waiting areas, and office furniture for our commercial clients based in Brisbane. We even offer our services outside regular business hours if needed.

That’s not a problem. Once we arrive at your location, we will conduct a colourfastness test on an inconspicuous area of the couch, determine the type of fabric by its touch and texture, and select our approach based on that information. Most contemporary couches have artificial materials that can be cleaned using hot water extraction.
