At Carpestology, we offer cockroach services throughout the Brisbane region based out of our location in Camp Hill, and if dissatisfied with the first treatment, same-day re-treatment is available. As a family business, the person who quotes the job is the person who does the job, and there is no unnecessary upselling of services either. Contact us today.

How our cockroach treatment works

All treatments begin with a walkthrough. The search is for live cockroaches, droppings, cast-off skins and egg cases, after which we identify the sources and harbourage areas for these pests. Common areas to inspect are kitchens, laundries, bathrooms, and kitchen sink cabinets. In old buildings, we will inspect subfloor areas, weep holes, pipe runs and roof spaces.

The method of control used will depend on the findings made during the inspection. For infestations caused by German cockroaches, we might use gel baits that we can put in cracks, hinges, behind appliances, and in the motor housing, as using only sprays will disperse them and make the situation even worse. For the bigger species, we employ a combination of residual spraying at their points of entry, along with spraying harbourage areas. Wherever there is a heavier population, the use of an insect growth regulator will be made so that the next generation cannot reach the reproductive stage.

What’s included in a standard treatment

The usual residential program includes treatment of internal harbourage sites, external perimeter spraying, subfloor and roof cavity treatments (if accessible), and a report summarising the findings and treatments used. Products will be applied that are safe for home use where there are children and pets present, and the technician will advise on dwell times prior to leaving the premises. Should carpet be present, we’ll inform you whether there are any fecal deposits and shed skins trapped in the carpet, since this is an additional clean-up task.

How long it takes and when you’ll see results

It takes around 60 to 90 minutes for most households. In cases of external pests, there is a quick decline in activity after 48 hours. For German roaches, this process takes longer since they reproduce quickly and conceal themselves. It will take from 7 to 14 days to complete the cycle for the bait among the population. There could be an increase in numbers temporarily, but it is important to remember that the treatment is still taking effect.

How much cockroach treatment costs in Brisbane

The pricing for cockroach treatments in Brisbane is based on the size of the property and the level of infestation. The cost for treating a small apartment or townhouse would be low. An example of a property that costs more to treat is a house with subfloor access and German cockroaches.

What moves the price: the number of internal rooms, whether external and sub-floor treatment is needed, the species involved, and whether you want a follow-up visit built into the quote. Severe German cockroach infestations in older kitchens often need two visits 14 days apart, and we’ll quote that upfront rather than spring it on you later. Commercial properties are priced on-site because food prep areas, storage and back-of-house all have different requirements.

We do not add any additional callout fee to the cost of the service, and the amount you agree to in the quotation will be your final payment amount. Just provide us with your address and details of what you have been observing.

Why DIY rarely works on Brisbane cockroach infestations

Supermarket sprays kill the cockroaches you can see, not the ones behind the dishwasher motor or inside the wall cavity. With German cockroaches especially, surface spraying is counter-productive: it pushes them deeper into harbourage and triggers them to disperse, so a localised problem becomes a whole-house one. Bombs and foggers have the same effect.

DIY treatment also does not take into consideration the egg sacs of the roaches. One egg sac for the German roach contains about 30 to 40 eggs that are resistant to many over-the-counter remedies. You could reduce the roach population through the adult roaches, but still experience new hatchlings after two weeks.

When a DIY approach is still worth trying

If you’ve observed a couple of American or Australian cockroaches inside your house following rainy weather, you don’t need our services. This is because they are primarily outdoor cockroaches that enter your home via weep holes, plumbing, doors that aren’t properly sealed, and even drainage systems. All you’ll require are a few bait traps from the store, and then you’re sorted!

When to call a licensed pest controller

If you see small light brown cockroaches with two black stripes behind the head (German cockroaches), then give us a call. They only breed inside and will never go away by themselves. If you see droppings (ground pepper-like pellets or coffee grounds) in your cabinets or drawers, we want to hear from you. This indicates that these cockroaches are living in and around your kitchen, rather than simply walking through. Also, contact us if the problem keeps coming back after treating yourself two or three times.

The Brisbane cockroaches we treat

German cockroach

Most problematic out of all the four for indoor infestations. Small in size (between 10 to 15mm in length) and light brown in colour with two dark brown stripes on the pronotum. Indoors living and breeding insects that like warm and humid places, such as kitchens and bathrooms, and they reproduce quickly. The German cockroach requires proper control using baits and IGR.

American cockroach

The large reddish-brown one measuring up to 40mm in size that flies short distances and emerges in laundries, garages and bathrooms following rain. The American cockroach is an outdoor species found in drains, sub-floor areas, garden mulches and stormwater sumps. It enters indoor areas in search of food and moisture.

Australian cockroach

About the same size as the American cockroach and easily confused with one, except that this type is marked with patches of pale yellow at the wing edges and back of the head. An outdoor roach, found in litter under palm trees, in piles of wood, gardens, and compost piles. Like the American, it comes indoors for the same reasons.

Brown-banded cockroach

Smaller (measuring around 10-15mm) with stripes on their wings. They are less abundant compared to the other three in Brisbane, but can still be found. Unlike German cockroaches, they have a preference for drier locations above ground, so checking their locations will include pantries, picture frames, electrical appliances, and upper cupboards. Similar treatment for German cockroaches, but bait positioning varies.

Why Brisbane homes get repeat cockroach problems

For the cockroach, Brisbane provides an ideal habitat. The subtropical humidity, mild winters that do not reduce numbers, numerous old houses offering cracks and crevices to live in, and a constantly damp sub-floor area.

Humidity, leaks, and moisture pathways

Cockroaches require water over food. Leaks from taps inside and outside the house, water gathering behind a fridge or washing machine, or an overflowing gutter system that keeps the subfloor wet will keep them alive endlessly. In Brisbane’s summer months, the air humidity level alone would do the trick for some houses. If we treat your property and you’ve still got a leak we couldn’t access, the cockroaches will come back to it. We’ll flag any moisture issue we spot on the inspection.

Entry points and shared walls in older Queenslanders

There are many entry points in older Queenslanders and postwar homes made out of timber. The tongue-and-groove flooring with space, holes where pipe work enters the wall, sub-floor venting, and roof spaces shared by semi-detached and townhouses. Cockroaches move along pipe work and wires, which is why a unit may have an infestation of German cockroaches that actually started off in the unit three doors away. For townhouse complexes, at times, we suggest the body corporate take care of the problem.

Why we recommend pairing cockroach treatment with carpet and upholstery cleaning

Cockroach treatment kills the cockroaches. It doesn’t remove what they’ve left behind, and that’s a gap most pest controllers don’t talk about. Carpestology is licensed for both pest management and carpet cleaning, so we can do the whole job in one visit if it makes sense.

Where droppings, shed skins, and allergens actually settle

Cockroaches shed their skin five to seven times as they grow, and the bigger the population, the more cast skins end up in the environment. Combined with droppings, dead cockroach fragments and the residue from any food they’ve been feeding on, this material breaks down into a fine particulate that triggers allergies and asthma in sensitive people. It doesn’t sit on hard surfaces where you can wipe it up. It settles into carpet pile, upholstery fabric, rugs, curtains and mattresses, and gets pushed deeper by foot traffic.

A vacuum sucks up some of it. The hot water extraction method (HWE or steam cleaning) rinses out the remaining substance together with the food residue that the cockroaches left behind. As far as upholstery is concerned, the same method applies. This is because if your sofa rests in the room that was plagued by German cockroaches, then it should also be cleaned.

How a combined service works and what it costs

Our pest control service is done first, we leave for the recommended dwell time (which will be 2 to 4 hours), and then return the same day to clean your carpeting and upholstery. Having these two services bundled is more affordable compared to having them done individually, since we’re on the job anyway. We’ll also give you quotes for each one beforehand.

Signs your property needs cockroach treatment now

You find a live cockroach crawling about during daytime. As the insect is nocturnal, finding it during the day indicates the presence of overcrowding in the harbourage. You see cockroach droppings on cupboard shelves or inside drawers and appliances. You smell something odd in the kitchen or in the laundry that you cannot attribute to any other item or food (an odour of infestation becomes distinctly musty in the case of heavy infestations). You see egg capsules, which appear in small dark brown forms in crevices or behind hinges. You come across shed skins that look like cockroach forms without colour.

How to keep cockroaches out after treatment

1

Moisture and leak fixes

Fix anything that drips. Check under the kitchen sink, under the bathroom vanity, behind the toilet, the outdoor tap, and any visible plumbing in the laundry. Wipe out the kitchen sink before bed so it’s not sitting wet overnight. Don’t leave the dog’s water bowl right next to a fridge or oven where warmth and water create perfect cockroach conditions.

2

Sealing entry points

Walk the perimeter of the house and look at the gaps. Door sweeps on external doors. Silicone around pipework where it enters walls. Mesh over weep holes and sub-floor vents that have rusted out. In older Queenslanders, sealing every gap is unrealistic, so focus on the kitchen, bathroom, laundry and any external wet areas where moisture pulls cockroaches in.

3

Food storage and sanitation habits

Store dry food in sealed containers, not original packaging. Don’t leave dirty dishes overnight. Take the bin out before bed if it’s got food scraps in it. Wipe down benches after cooking. None of this is glamorous, and none of it is new, but it’s the difference between a treatment that holds for 12 months and one that fades in three.

“Matt did a fantastic job restoring my two stained, cream coloured, Koala couch/beds, and ottoman, to brand new condition. He paid so much attention to detail, was efficient, knowledgable, and nothing was too much effort. His price was extremely reasonable considering the quality work. I thoroughly recommend Matt for carpet, rug, couch and mattress cleaning.”

Brenda Coleman

“I cannot express enough how amazing my carpets/couch/rug came up after Matt cleaned them. I was thinking I had to buy a new rug and couch. All stains came out and it looks as good as the day I bought it. I’ve had two previous cleaners in the past that could not get the stains out. Absolute 10 out of 10 score. So friendly and reliable. I will definitely be recommending to all my friends.”

Melissa Shay

“Matt did an amazing job! He was able to book me last minute which was great. Super kind, and with great predisposition – arrived on time, worked super fast and everything looks fab! He did a bedroom carpet, a large rug, our mattress and couch. Thank you Matt! Super Recommended”

Frequently asked questions

How long until cockroaches are gone after treatment?

American and Australian cockroaches will show definite signs of slowing down within two days, whereas it takes from seven to 14 days for a German cockroach infestation, as the pesticide has to go around the colony. In fact, during the initial days, there may be an increase in activity.

We apply treatments designed for homes with children and pets in areas of little activity, such as cracks, crevices, and perimeter areas. We’ll request that you keep everyone away from treated areas until dried, which generally takes 2 to 4 hours. This will be explained by the technician on the day of service.

You will not have to leave your house for the majority of jobs that we do; however, in some cases, we might request that you remain outside the room during treatment. Where heavy German cockroach treatments are needed in food preparation areas, we will advise you that you must leave the building for a number of hours.

If you’re not happy with the result, we’ll come back and re-treat. Same-day where possible, no surcharge.

For localised infestations, such as those caused by German Cockroaches and contained within a specific area like the kitchen, we can provide single-room services. For any other kind of infestation, however, total treatment of the entire house is more effective since cockroaches move through pipes and wires.

Yes. We service homes, apartments, offices, retail and small food premises across Brisbane. Commercial work is quoted on-site because the requirements vary by industry.
